Q&A with Shangri-La Bali Resort and Spa General Manager, Mr. Herve Duboscq
Frontiers: Welcome to the Nusa Dua family, Mr Duboscq. A lot of travellers and industry experts are anxious about the opening of the Shangri-La Bali Resort & Spa. So, we have to ask right off the top --- do you have an opening date set?
Thank you for the warm welcome. We hope to be able to announce an opening date for the Shangri-La's Bali Resort & Spa, The Maj Nusa Dua soon. The team is looking forward to bringing our signature Shangri-La service levels paired with renowned Balinese hospitality to our clients visiting Bali when we open.
Frontiers: Some of the room categories will be amongst Nusa Dua's largest and we hear that includes a collection of expansive family suites with children's bedrooms. Can you give us a preview of what families can expect from their in-room experience?
Indeed, our rooms, starting from around 50sqm, will be among the largest lead-in rooms in Nusa Dua. For families, there is much to look forward to with our eight themed suites and other family-friendly amenities. These specially designed suites feature an adjoining children’s bedroom that is connected via a secret tunnel. Each children’s bedroom has its own whimsical theme with dedicated sleeping, dining and play area. Special child amenities will also be made available.
The family wing will feature its own family pantry offering a range of travel-related facilities such as strollers, baby cots, toiletries and toys throughout their stay with us. This provides added convenience for families, enabling parents to travel light and enjoy a care-free vacation. The resort will also feature one of the largest indoor and outdoor play areas.
Frontiers: Located next to the Bali National Golf Club certainly has its advantages and with a dedicated family pool and children activities, is it possible the guest focus might be more towards families? More to the point, what is the estimated ratio of couples and families and golfers and what are your source markets?
We have specially designed three distinctive wings to provide great experiences for guests who might visit us as a couple, a family, in large leisure or MICE groups. Our resort is also the first in the Nusa Dua area to be integrated with an award-winning golf course, the Bali National Golf Club with our 40-pool villas facing both hole 17 and hole 18. In terms of source markets, we see Bali continuing to feature highly on the travel agendas for visitors from Indonesia, Australia, China, United Kingdom to name a few.
Frontiers: Tell us about your spa and what will set you apart from the others?
Luxurious yet down to earth, The Spa provides our guests with a place for personal peace and well-being. Our intuitive and skilled therapists employ a caring touch to rejuvenate the body and soothe the senses with holistic treatments that are based on time-honoured methods shared by many Asian cultures. Both indoor and outdoor spa & beauty treatments will be offered at The Spa. Guests booked into the relaxation room will look out to the ocean as they indulge in their spa treatments.
Frontiers: We hear each villa will feature a wine cellar and dining room. Wow. Could that be a first for Nusa Dua? Tell us more about your villa offering and what unique experiences await families and large groups?
We will have one of the largest inventories of three-bedroom villas located in a resort. All villas face Bali National Golf Course and our three-bedroom Villa Ujung is situated in the garden facing the splendid ocean.
Our 40 double-storey villas are designed like a home away from home for couples, multi-generational families and friends travelling together. Each spacious villa will feature a 14-metre swimming pool, full kitchen facilities, a mini wine cellar, dedicated dining room and lounge areas.
We will also specially curate family-themed experiences and concepts to be enjoyed in the comfort of the villas. Imagine treehouses in the back yard, cinema under the stars by your poolside, fun times for the whole family. Guests are welcome to freely explore the resort and the Nusa Dua area on bicycles that are readily available at their villas.
Frontiers: Shangri-La is well known for some of the best Asian hotel dining amongst your 100 plus properties worldwide. I am sure we can expect the same at the Nusa Dua property. So, what can we look for modern Cantonese with tropical influences or just honest to goodness traditional dishes à la Shangri-La?
Xi Yan, our signature new-generation Chinese restaurant, will feature fresh seafood and locally sourced produce from Bali and elsewhere in Indonesia. The restaurant, located on the highest floor of the hotel, will provide diners either amazing unobstructed views of the Indian Ocean or overlooks hole 17 of the Bali National Golf Course.
Xi Yan Bar and the bar terrace will be a hive of activity and the centre of mixology action for us. Our mixologist will be curating a special cocktail menu featuring a mix of classic and trendy cocktails dressed with local garnish for a Balinese twist.
Frontiers: Our last question for you, Herve. Nusa Dua today as you know is a well appreciated as a MICE destination. We see your property is certainly aiming for that business. Any unique attributes for event planners to consider?
The newest Shangri-La Resort will feature world-class accommodation, F&B offerings and a fabulous outdoor beachfront location. Not only are we located amidst 36 acres of greenery, our Resort is the only resort next to Bali National Golf Course, the renowned 18-hole championship golf course.
Corporate event or wedding planners will be spoilt for choice with the array of indoor and outdoor spaces available in our property, including one of the largest pillar-less ballrooms in Nusa Dua (1,750sqm) that can accommodate up to 2,000 guests for a reception. Exclusive and intimate dinner affairs can be hosted in our floating Lotus chapel.
