Massive Audience on Doorstep of Circuit Mandalika
The Mandalika International Street Circuit is undergoing a review process for approval by the FIM (International Motorcycle Federation) and the FIA (International Automobile Federation), the world governing bodies for motorcycle and automobile sports.
The fast-developing, integrated resort located on Lombok is poised to welcome a number of races by 2021, a move that would delight the huge Motosport audience in Indonesia and signal the first Indonesia Grand Prix since 1997.
One race under review is The MotoGP, which has its largest audience right here in Indonesia and makes up a significant proportion of the official MotoGP social network worldwide; additionally, most Google searches for anything MotoGP-related come from Indonesia, followed by Italy and Spain.
Indonesia is the third largest motorcycle consumer in the world, trailing only by China and India, and with that reality Mandalika is expected to be the center of attention for its MotoGP circuit.
Last October, the town of Buri Ram in northeastern Thailand enjoyed a massive success with sprawling crowds attending a MotoGP round at the Chang International Circuit. Spaniard Marc Marquez dominated the 26-lap race and made history as the first MotoGP rider to win in Thailand.
How successful was the event? Buri Ram wasted no time in nailing its second annual MotoGp weekend race scheduled for Oct 2019.
The race was one of the biggest sports events held in Thailand. MotoGP claims an audience of about 300 million households or, more than a billion people, which is about three-quarters of the number who watch Formula One motor races.
Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat estimated that the event generated three billion baht (US$91 million) for Buri Ram and neighboring provinces. In the same way, the Mandalika Circuit will surely add to Lombok’s economy.
Like Buri Ram, the Mandalika Circuit is expected to draw huge crowds with its integrated exhibition center, covered paddock, tropical climate and upscale hospitality and entertainment in close proximity.
