The study estimates that the 2025 MotoGP Mandalika generated an economic impact of approximately IDR 2.7–4.7 trillion, while highlighting the potential of sport tourism as a driver of tourism growth and regional economic development.
The book is the result of a study conducted by the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) in collaboration with PT Pengembangan Pariwisata Indonesia (Persero), or InJourney Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), and Mandalika Grand Prix Association (MGPA), both part of the InJourney ecosystem. The study also involved several ministries and institutions, including the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of State Secretariat, Statistics Indonesia (BPS), and Bank Indonesia.
President Director of InJourney, Maya Watono, said the launch of the book represents an important momentum to view the MotoGP Mandalika not merely as a sporting event, but as part of a broader destination development strategy and an economic driver that generates wider benefits for communities.
“For InJourney, MotoGP Mandalika is more than just an international sporting event. It is a platform that brings together sports, tourism, connectivity, the creative economy, MSMEs, local talent, and Indonesia’s nation branding. Therefore, we welcome the Bappenas study, which provides a more comprehensive picture of how a global event can generate a multiplier effect for the economy and destination development,” said Maya.
According to Maya, the findings also reinforce the importance of building an integrated ecosystem so that the benefits generated by events can continue to grow and extend beyond the event itself.
“What we want to build is not only a successful event while it is taking place, but an ecosystem that continues to grow before, during, and after the event. This includes connectivity, destination readiness, the quality of the tourist experience, the involvement of MSMEs and communities, and the development of local talent. Concerted efforts and a spirit of mutual cooperation are needed from the central government, local governments, ministries and institutions, industry players, communities, and the public to ensure that the impact continues to expand,” Maya added.
The study conducted by the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) and ITDC involved a survey of more than 1,800 respondents, comprising domestic spectators, international tourists, MSME operators, workers, and sponsors. The results recorded a spectator experience score (brand equity) of 5.07 out of 6. The study also estimated that increased exposure for Mandalika could potentially boost tourist arrivals by approximately 11 percent, with potential additional tourist spending of IDR 44.5 billion if supported by integrated destination promotion.
From a local economic perspective, the MotoGP Mandalika contributed to increased activity across MSMEs, employment, transportation, accommodation, the creative economy, and tourism sectors. Worker and volunteer satisfaction reached 5.51 out of 6, while satisfaction among MSME operators and tenants reached 5.23. Beyond its economic impact, the global exposure generated by MotoGP Mandalika also provided significant promotional value for Indonesia and Mandalika. The study recorded an Advertising Value Equivalency (AVE) of EUR 361.6 million, equivalent to approximately IDR 6.9 trillion.
Maya added that these findings provide valuable insights for InJourney in developing sport tourism in Indonesia, including through the organization of the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia at The Mandalika.
“These data and insights provide an important foundation for continuous improvement. We want every international event held in Indonesia to leave a lasting legacy, whether through improved destination quality, enhanced human resource capacity and local talent development, MSME growth, or a stronger position for Indonesia as a global sport tourism destination,” said Maya.
As part of the InJourney ecosystem, ITDC plays a key role in developing The Mandalika as both a tourism area and a sport tourism destination. Acting President Director of ITDC, Ahmad Fajar, said the findings of the Bappenas study reinforce the importance of transforming the impact of events into long-term benefits for regional development.
“MotoGP Mandalika demonstrates that an international sporting event is not merely a spectacle, but can serve as a catalyst for economic growth and sustainable destination development. For ITDC, this momentum must be transformed from an event-based economy into event-led development, so that its impact does not end when the race is over, but continues to be felt by the destination and local communities,” he said.
Fajar added that, with more than 52 years of experience, ITDC continues to strengthen its role as Master Developer and Asset Manager through the development of integrated infrastructure, facilities, and destination ecosystems, as well as collaboration with industry players and communities.
“This is part of our commitment to establishing The Mandalika as a world-class sport tourism destination that is vibrant 365 days a year, while creating sustainable economic and social value,” he added.
Meanwhile, President Director of MGPA, Ananda Mikola, said that MotoGP and various motorsport events in Mandalika also play an important role in building Indonesia’s national motorsport ecosystem, particularly by providing opportunities for young Indonesian talents to develop and compete at the international level.
“The Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia provides an opportunity for Indonesia to be part of the global motorsport stage. More importantly, however, we want this momentum to contribute to building the national motorsport ecosystem, from developing young riders and professional personnel to marshals and various supporting professions. The presence of talents such as Veda Ega Pratama and Mario Aji demonstrates how international events can become part of the journey for Indonesian talents toward the global stage,” said Ananda.
Ananda added that MGPA will continue to strengthen the quality of event organization and the development of the motorsport ecosystem at the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit. Various events held at the circuit provide opportunities for national riders and talents to gain competitive experience based on international standards.
The development of this ecosystem is aligned with the upcoming Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia 2026, which will take place on October 9–11, 2026, at the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit. As preparations enter their final phase, InJourney, together with ITDC, MGPA, the regional government, ministries and institutions, and various stakeholders, continues to coordinate efforts to ensure event readiness while expanding its benefits for local communities.
Previously, InJourney, together with ITDC, MGPA, and the West Nusa Tenggara Provincial Government, also held discussion forums and track inspections to consolidate readiness across various sectors, including the circuit and race operations, connectivity, accommodation, transportation, security, healthcare, tourism, and community and MSME participation. During the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia 2026 period, an additional 66 flights to and from NTB have been recorded to support the mobility of tourists and spectators.
InJourney also continues to encourage local community capacity building through the involvement of regional workers and talents. During previous MotoGP events, the event ecosystem created opportunities for thousands of local workers and hundreds of MSMEs to participate. In 2026, 100 percent of the marshals on duty will be local talents from NTB who have met international standards.
Through this cross-sector collaboration, InJourney positions MotoGP Mandalika as part of its efforts to build a sport tourism ecosystem that delivers broader and more sustainable benefits.
