The Mandalika, November 6, 2026 – PT Pengembangan Pariwisata Indonesia (Persero), also known as InJourney Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), continues to strengthen the implementation of sustainability principles in organizing international sporting events. One of these initiatives is circular economy-based waste management during the 2026 Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia, held on October 9–11, 2026, at the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit, within The Mandalika, Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).
Over the three-day event, a total of 47,462 kilograms of waste was collected and managed, comprising 51% organic waste and 49% inorganic waste. Of the total waste generated, only 8% ended up in landfills, down from 14% during the 2025 event. Overall, the amount of waste generated was also successfully reduced by 15%, including a 31% reduction in non-recyclable inorganic waste and a 19% reduction in organic waste.
One of the initiatives implemented was food surplus management to optimize the handling of excess food throughout the event. Food that remained suitable for consumption was distributed through a takeaway system, while food waste that was no longer suitable for consumption was processed using the Black Soldier Fly (BSF), or maggot, method to produce compost. This waste management initiative also involved waste bank communities from villages surrounding The Mandalika as part of a circular economy collaboration that delivers environmental benefits while creating value for local communities.
These achievements are particularly significant given the increase in visitors to the 2026 Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia, which reached a record 157,875 visitors, representing a 12.5% increase compared to 2025. Despite the growth in visitor numbers, the waste generation rate was successfully reduced to 0.3 kilograms per visitor, compared to 0.4 kilograms per visitor in the previous year. This demonstrates improvements in waste management effectiveness, from waste sorting to reuse and recovery throughout the event.
ITDC Operations Director, Troy Warokka, stated that waste management is one of the key aspects of organizing international events in an environmentally responsible manner.
“The 2026 Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia serves as an opportunity to further strengthen The Mandalika's position as a world-class sport tourism destination that embraces sustainable tourism principles. Despite the increase in visitor numbers this year, we successfully reduced the amount of waste generated per visitor. This achievement reflects more structured waste management practices and collaboration among various stakeholders, including communities surrounding the area. We want to ensure that international events not only generate economic benefits but also take environmental sustainability into account,” said Troy.
Moving forward, ITDC will continue to optimize circular economy-based waste management through improved waste sorting by type, the utilization of economically valuable waste, and stronger collaboration with waste management partners and surrounding communities. These efforts are expected to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills while creating added value for the circular economy ecosystem in The Mandalika.
Through these initiatives, ITDC remains committed to organizing international-scale events that not only drive economic growth and community empowerment but also maintain a balance with environmental preservation.
